House extension Scartingwell Park, North Yorkshire.
This property is in the Green Belt and stands in 11 acres of private grounds including mature woodland and an 8 acre lake. Inexplicably the house did not have any uninterrupted views of the woodland and the lake from any room other than bedrooms.
We were engaged to design and gain the approvals for a contemporary styled garden room with direct access and views to the lake. The room would be south facing so must not overheat due to solar gain.
We designed a light steel framed structure concealed within full height aluminium curtain walling incorporating sliding doors opening onto a patio overlooking the lake. To avoid solar gain we specified Pilkington’s Sun Cool glazing to the glazed walls and partially glazed roof. The remainder of the roof was finished in blue slate. This created the feeling of a living room rather than a conservatory. With the high specification glazing and heavily insulated solid elements the room is warm in winter and cool in summer and used for 12 months of the year.
